Visit to the KLT Filtration factory
Recently, we had the unique opportunity to visit the factory of KLT Filtration, the creators of Coldstream filters, and to explore behind the scenes of this innovative company.
Located in the heart of England, KLT Filtration stands out for its commitment to quality and scientific innovation.
Collaboration with the University of Cambridge
At the heart of KLT's (Coldstream) innovation is a successful collaboration with the University of Cambridge.
This synergy between industry and academic research allows KLT to remain at the forefront of filtration technology, with a particular focus on the research and development of new water purification methods.

An artisanal manufacturing process
During our visit, we were particularly impressed by the manufacturing process of Coldstream filters, which combines state-of-the-art technology with craftsmanship. Every step of the ceramic manufacturing process, from initial design to finishing, is executed with meticulous care.
The machines used, especially those operating under high pressure and those dedicated to polishing, are operated by skilled craftsmen, thus guaranteeing the quality of the product.
A unique materials-process ecosystem at King's Lynn
What makes Coldstream special is not only the filters themselves. On the same site as KLT Filtration, two sister companies work on a daily basis with the Coldstream team: PCL Ceramics, a global specialist in high-pressure casting and microporous resin moulds, and PIL Membranes, an expert in high-performance polymer membranes (Porelle and Permair brands). This proximity creates very short R&D loops: an idea goes faster from prototype to series, with precise control of porosity and flow rates.
What this changes for the user:
– Performance repeatability: PCL molds made of microporous resin, combined with die casting machines, allow for homogeneous walls and tight tolerances. The result: more consistent flow rates from batch to batch and consistent filtration over time.
– PCL Ceramics Finish and Surface Cleanliness: PCL molds result in thinner surfaces, reduce defects, and limit washing operations between cycles. This avoids variations in texture that could influence the flow at the end of the cycle.
– Rapid and controlled industrialization: PCL designs lines capable of ranging from manual demolding to robotic automation. For Coldstream, this means a smooth transition from lab to production, with traceability and process stability.
– Membrane culture and pore science – Porelle Membranes : PIL Membranes brings more than 40 years of know-how in microporous and hydrophilic membranes, where everything depends on the control of pore thickness, permeability and distribution. This "membrane" culture feeds the way Coldstream thinks about filtering ceramics.
In short: one address, three areas of expertise
- KLT Filtration : design and manufacture of Coldstream ceramic filters.
- PCL Ceramics: microporous resin molds and high-pressure casting, from prototyping to automation.
- PIL Membranes : high-performance polymer membranes (microporous PU, hydrophilic PU, two-component PTFE) for demanding markets.
Careful choice of materials
The activated carbon used by KLT Filtration is carefully selected for its exceptional adsorption properties. It is chosen for its effectiveness in removing a wide range of contaminants, including nitrates, providing superior purified water.
Sustainability and energy autonomy
A remarkable aspect of KLT Filtration's plant is its commitment to sustainability. The energy needed for production is entirely provided by wind turbines and solar panels installed on site, minimizing the company's ecological footprint and reducing energy costs.

Quality Control and Scientific Innovation
KLT leaves nothing to chance when it comes to quality. The company has its own laboratory to carry out rigorous quality controls and initial tests on each batch of filters produced. Two scientists are integrated into the team to ensure not only quality control but also productivity optimization.
KLT has a scanning electron microscope to measure the presence of contaminants and ensure the good manufacturing quality of their ceramics.
To assess the porous structure of their ceramic, KLT uses mercury porosimetry, a technique that provides an estimate of the average pore size.
On the other hand, always in the desire to guarantee flawless reliability, additional tests are also carried out by independent laboratories. This visit allowed us to see first-hand the passion and expertise that drives KLT Filtration. With such a dedication to quality, innovation and sustainability, Coldstream filters are positioned as a benchmark in the field of water filtration, offering a reliable and eco-friendly solution for pure and healthy water.
In summary, we believe that KLT Filtration embodies excellence in the field of water filtration technology, with an approach that combines artisanal tradition with modern innovation. An inspiring model for the industry and a guarantee of quality for families concerned about being self-sufficient in drinking and healthy water. When you visit the factory, you understand that Coldstream's strength goes beyond ceramics alone: it is the rare integration of a ceramics, moulds and membranes division on the same site, with a mainly renewable production energy, which makes it possible to combine artisanal quality, industrial resources and R&D responsiveness
