Coldstream Water Filters

Learn more about Coldstream water filters and their filtration process

Coldstream water filters and purifiers are designed to deliver clean, pure, high-quality drinking water. Their advanced filtration process effectively reduces contaminants and impurities in the water, providing a convenient and reliable solution to meet your drinking water needs.

The filtration process of Coldstream pressure water filters is simple and efficient :

Cold water is directed through a filter housing, where it passes through a specially designed ceramic filter. This ceramic filter acts as a barrier, capturing unwanted particles, sediments, nitrates, fluorine bacteria, viruses and chemicals (PFAS, herbicides, pesticides, ....) and heavy metals present in the water. This filtration stage effectively removes contaminants while retaining essential salts and electrolytes, which contribute to the pleasant taste of the water.

The filtration process of Coldstream gravity water filters is simple and efficient :

A gravity filter works on a simple but effective principle: water is poured into an upper tank, then passes through one or more gravity purifying filters before being collected in a lower tank, ready to be consumed. The filters, composed of activated carbon, ceramic, remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals and chemicals (PFAS, herbicides, pesticides, etc.), nitrates, fluoride. The force of gravity pushes water through the pores of the filter, allowing filtration without the need for electricity or external pressure. This method ensures purified drinking water in an environmentally friendly and economical way.

Coldstream water filters are also subject to Independent Testing to ensure their effectiveness and performance. They are built to last and require little maintenance, making them a convenient and cost-effective solution for high-quality drinking water.

Whether you're using tap water or looking to filter water from other sources, Coldstream water filters are an ideal choice to ensure the safety and purity of your drinking water.

Specific features and performance of Coldstream filters

  • Coldstream filters are manufactured by the company KLT Filtration Ltd in the United Kingdom (UK).
  • The ceramic and activated carbon materials used in Coldstream water filters Sentry, , CTO Plus, , Max and FTO+ operate and treat your water safely.
  • Filters Coldstream FTO+ are compatible with British Berkefeld, Berkey, ProOne, Weeplow (except for the 5.6L model), Purewell, Phoenix tanks.
  • Coldstream filters offer one gravity filter (FTO+) and three water pressure filters (CTO, Sentry, Max). This allows you to use a Coldstream system directly connected to your faucet by installing it easily without having to perform plumbing tasks.

The three principles of Coldstream technology

Trapping

- The external ceramic, used on Coldstream water filters, uses a combination of mechanical trapping and bacteriostatic protection. It is manufactured using a highly controlled process unique to Coldstream, producing a very high quality ceramic. This ceramic is composed mainly of natural materials, including diatomaceous earth (fossilized microorganisms formed from calcium carbonate or silica).

- Its complex and porous structure provides a large exchange surface and effectively traps particles, bacteria and microorganisms present in the water.

- A small amount of ionized silver is integrated into the ceramic to prevent microbial growth on the filter surface between uses, without any biocidal action on the filtered water.

Silver ionized for bacteriostatic purposes

- The outer ceramic of Coldstream filters combines very fine mechanical trapping and bacteriostatic protection through the incorporation of a small amount of ionized silver.

- This impregnation prevents the proliferation of microorganisms on the surface of the filter between uses, without chemical action on the filtered water.

- Bacteria and viruses are removed by mechanical filtration (≤ 0.2 μm) in accordance with NSF/ANSI P231 protocols.

Adsorption

- Once the water has passed through the ceramic and the particles and microorganisms have been removed, the water enters the activated carbon layer. The carbon removes chemical contaminants and heavy metals from the water through an adsorption process. Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions, or molecules of a dissolved gas, liquid, or solid to a surface. Coldstream water filters and purifiers are tested simultaneously to determine the removal performance of more than 70 contaminants.

Learn more about Coldstream's innovative and modern technology

Coldstream distinguishes itself in the field of water filtration by using a particularly advanced test method, using a scanning electron microscope to measure the presence of contaminants. This practice, which is quite unique in the industry, regularly raises questions from both consumers and professionals, due to its complexity and importance that are poorly understood.

The notable feature of Coldstream filters is the variability in the pore size of their ceramic, which is not uniform across the material. This heterogeneity, resulting from the nature and specific structure of the ceramics used, leads to an average pore size of 1.0 microns, although this size varies considerably within the material. This variation makes it impossible to quote a fixed pore size, as the porosity and pore sizes are inherently diverse within each filter.

Contrary to popular belief that filters have a uniform pore size, comparable to a fishing net where all the holes are identical, the structure of a Coldstream filter is more like a field of rocks, with pores down to 0.01 microns and others much larger, typically located between fused particles.

To assess this porous structure, Coldstream uses mercury porosimetry, a technique that provides an estimate of the average pore size. The equipment used for these measurements is state-of-the-art and can determine the wide range of pore sizes present, from very small to significantly larger. This qualitative approach allows Coldstream to ensure a consistent product structure, maximizing filtration efficiency against bacteria and viruses while maintaining a satisfactory water flow.

This rigorous methodology is part of Coldstream's commitment to providing the highest quality filters, meeting strict water purification standards and providing effective protection for users.

The Coldstream manufacturing method

Did you know that Coldstream uses an innovative manufacturing method for its filters, which is based on high-pressure casting of ceramics ?

This technique makes it possible to produce filters with a high-quality structure and carefully selected activated carbon filter media, significantly improving their ability to remove particles and contaminants from water such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals and chemicals.

The high-pressure casting process ensures that the filter material, a mixture of ceramic and activated carbon, is compacted in a way that maximizes the filtration surface while maintaining optimal porosity. This allows Coldstream filters to provide excellent filtration performance, long life, and high efficiency in reducing contaminants, while maintaining an acceptable water flow.

This approach differs from more traditional methods of ceramic filter production, where the pressure applied may be less, potentially resulting in less consistent filtration performance.

By incorporating cutting-edge technologies and high-quality materials into their manufacturing process, Coldstream ensures that its filters meet the highest standards for water purification.
